KAPNA Hosts Two Virtual Conferences for Students and Early-career Researchers in Kazakhstan
The Kazakhstani Association of PhDs in North America (KAPNA) successfully hosted two virtual conferences in Fall 2024, aimed at supporting students and early-career researchers in Kazakhstan. These events provided valuable guidance on pursuing doctoral education and advancing research careers, addressing critical gaps in mentorship and professional development. The project was supported by the Edmund S. Muskie Program at Cultural Vistas.
The first conference, Starting Careers in Science and Research, brought together over 300 participants, including high school students, undergraduates, and professionals. Featuring four dynamic sessions, the event provided insights into the PhD journey, from gaining research experience to navigating international applications. Participants engaged with experts who shared practical advice on academic and career development.
The second event, Advancing Careers in Science and Research, focused on supporting early-career researchers and attracted over 90 attendees. Four expert-led sessions covered topics such as science communication, grant applications, and empowering women in academia. The interactive discussions fostered collaboration and provided practical strategies for professional growth.
Recordings from both conferences are available on KAPNA’s YouTube channel.
These conferences are part of a broader initiative to cultivate a culture of innovation and critical thinking in Kazakhstan. By leveraging the expertise of Kazakhstani PhDs and researchers in North America and beyond, KAPNA continues to provide aspiring scientists with the tools, knowledge, and networks needed to succeed in the global scientific community.
In addition to the conferences, KAPNA has developed two comprehensive resources: Guidebook for PhD Applications and Effective Science Communication Guide. Inspired by the themes and discussions from our events, these guides address critical gaps in the academic and research community. The Guidebook for PhD Applications provides practical insights into the doctoral application process, covering essential topics such as crafting strong application materials, selecting suitable programs, and navigating admissions. The Effective Science Communication Guide equips researchers with strategies to convey complex ideas clearly, combat misinformation, and build public trust in science.

“It was wonderful. Timekeeper did a good job. I believe that if a small certificate is given, more people will participate.”
